If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler
Director Chan Chu Hei joined hands with Theatre Horizon to create a performance aptly named after Calvino’s significant piece, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler. The play consisted of 7 scenes named as “If”, “On”, “Winter”, “Night”, “A”, “Travel” and “-er”.
Inspired by Calvino’s novels (If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, The Seasons in the City, The Baron in the Trees and Mr. Palomar), performers’ interaction with everyday objects composed the play. It took the lawn and timber walkway of Oi! as metaphors of the sea and dock, while the decorative lighting on the façade of the commercial building nearby as the rain.
As the actors traveled across the Oil Street Art Space, our production team coordinated a multiple-angle shooting with three cameras and live audio recording. As the play had elements of improvisation, our team had to remain highly flexible in order to capture the lonesome poetic journeys of the travelers.
